State Highway 1 over the Brynderwyn Hills is now fully open and ready for summer travel — ahead of schedule.
Roadworkers have completed all resurfacing work, reinstated the passing lanes, and restored the 80km/h speed limit, making travel to and from Northland smoother for motorists.
Despite heavy rain early in the closure, crews worked day and night to keep the finely tuned programme on track, ensuring the road could reopen as quickly as possible. This milestone marks the completion of the recovery project.
Delivering this work involved:
- 160 people on the ground
- 4,500 hours worked over four days
- 3,800 tonnes of asphalt applied
- 115 round trips to transport asphalt to the site — nearly 28,000km travelled in total
To maximise the benefit of the full closure, nine separate crews also completed maintenance tasks that would normally require manual traffic control. As a result, further travel delays have been avoided this summer.
This additional work included vegetation control, litter removal, drainage maintenance, guardrail and wire rope repairs, retaining wall inspections, and sign replacement and cleaning. More than 100 maintenance dispatches were completed.
Feel a huge appreciation for all the workers on the ground that made this happen!
